Hey there, all you lords of Lord and Taylor, all you princes and princesses of Neiman's. I just wanted to let everyone know that I was shopping with my mom in Fishs Eddy by Union Square recently and it was super boring. Finally, she bought some cute vintage-styled tumblers and on an impulse by the register, I got her to treat me to a pair of fat, beautiful shooter-sized marbles. Jealous?

Then we went to some boring furniture store and I sat on a chair that looked like a filing cabinet.

S Klein on the Square

When I was about 10 years old, my mother took me to S.Klein on the Square in Newark. We were looking for a party dress for me to wear to my Aunt Edith's wedding in Brooklyn.
However, we did not go to the regular part of the store. We went to the basement, hence the name bargain basement. There were racks of racks of dresses that had netting underneath and little peter pan collars. I was rather overwhelmed. We selected a fancy pastel colored dress that made me look unlike the self I had come to know, a kid with hand me down clothing from a second cousin who had lots of plaid. I do not recall ever going there again because then we switched to the bargain basement of Alexanders in Paramus.

Both these stores are long gone but perhaps this is why I always like a bargain.

Older Sister Methods

When me and my older sister were in some horrible nameless furniture/antique store with our mother once--possibly around ages 5 and 9--we were both complaining to a point where we were were both wailing and screeching--especially me. Then my sister--in an obvious ploy to drive me over the edge of a cliff--suddenly brightened and said, lying through her teeth, "I'M having a good time!" And I shrieked in frustration.

Work Shoes

Garment: Work Shoes
Discount: Buy 3 get 20% off, plus additional 15% off with Macy's charge, plus another 10% off
Section: Shoe
Acceptability Index: Yes, I will wear these. For work.

Since I moved home, I have been tagging along with my mom to the mall pretty consistently. Although we had had some luck with a twenty percent off coupon in the Lord and Taylor shoe department, I was a little on the fence about the pair I went with which we agreed were "a little trendy."

Macy's was having a sandal sale and I went along not planning to buy anything. My mom encouraged me to explore the flats, but they mostly looked TOO comfortable. I tried on a pair of alright t-straps, but she dismissed them, recommending a wedge. I said no way. I am not a wedge type of girl.

A few try-ons later, my mother pointed over at another pair of wedges, and said "this is really what I think you should be going for." As I prepared a wedge rebuttal case, I noticed that the shoes in question weren't completely horrible.

Sometimes moms know what they're talking about. I found them to be cute on, and surprisingly comfortable. With the sale and additional discounts, they were easily half the price of the LoTay pair. Returned those trendy suckers the next day.

I think this hat would look cute on you. Put your order in for UK shopping!
love, mom

My mom sent me a link to HECTOR RUSSELL KILTMAKERS: SCOTLAND'S TARTAN SPECIALIST so that I could view this Mohair Bonnet. The copy advertises humbly "a practical hat made in our own Scottish mill".

This blog is going to be devoted to stories about shopping with one's Mom. Field notes, hissed arguments, kilt-related coercion, Mom preferences and profiles, rabid discount hunting and department store exile, baffling suggestions, "just try it on for size" episodes, your mom commiserating with the sales staff over your failure to cooperate, waistband tugging, sweet finds-- we're going to run the gamut here. Run it into the ground.
